Mad Dogs & Englishmen opens gorgeous new restaurant in Tampa
Mad Dogs & Englishmen, the beloved South Tampa pub, is preparing for a fresh start. The pub has moved to a new location just down the street from its original restaurant at 4914 S. MacDill Avenue. Reservations are now open for the new space beginning on January 29.The new venue will feature a cozy atmosphere, a gastro-pub-inspired menu, and many community events. Recent video clips of the new location make it feel like a dreamy English cottage with a stone facade, a quaint outdoor patio, gorgeous green booth seats, a large fireplace, and tons of art on the walls. It may be the most photogenic new restaurant in the city.Mad Dogs & Englishmen, the “hidden gem on MacDill,” has been a staple of Tampa’s dining scene for over 30 years. The pub was founded in 1991 by Wilton Morley and Rick “The Colonel” Craig with more than just food in mind. They wanted to create a space where the community could gather, enjoy live music, sip on a great pint, and indulge in classic British dishes—all with a side of Morley’s trademark wit and storytelling.Enjoy some of the best fish and chips in Tampa at Mad Dogs & EnglishmenOxford Commons owners partner with Mad Dogs In 2022, the restaurant partnered with long-time friends Blake Casper and Alison Casper Adams, owners of Oxford Commons, a hospitality company with several concepts, including Oxford Exchange. Together, they embarked on a new venture to more than double the size of the original restaurant in a thoughtfully designed space just down the street.“The time had come for us to think about what was next,” said Morley. “And we had a special relationship with Blake since he worked here before college. We’ve stayed in touch all these years, so partnering with him and Allison made sense, and we couldn’t be more excited about introducing Mad Dogs 2.0 to the Tampa community. There isn’t anything like it!”Rendering of the future Mad Dogs and EnglishmenA fresh take on the classic British pubThe new Mad Dogs & Englishmen space spans 6,000 square feet and offers a fresh take on the classic British pub. Expect multiple dining areas, including a cozy fireplace lounge, a “Moroccan Room,” dog-friendly patios, and two bars. While you’ll still find beloved British dishes like Fish ‘N Chips and Shepherd’s Pie, Chef Jeff Clark adds creative new items like Stuffed Peppadews, Aubergine Bolognese, and Tuna Tartare. Plus, weekend brunch and traditional tea service will be on the menu. The extra space also means more community-focused events, like Sunday roasts, Trivia Tuesdays, a book club, and classes like “How to Pour the Perfect Pint.” And, of course, there will be plenty of TVs for Manchester United fans to catch the action.“This project is significant because of my connection to the restaurant,” said Casper. “We were cautious about honoring Mad Dog’s special soul, which Wilton brought to life in the old space. Each design choice helps tell a story, all baked in the comfort, tradition, and hospitality that Mad Dog’s is known for. We look forward to creating more memories when we open our doors at our new home!”Follow the restaurant on Instagram for updates. 100-unit affordable housing community opens in Tampa
After 18 months of construction, Casa Bel Mar (4003 S. Manhattan Ave) has officially opened in Tampa, providing 100 one- and two-bedroom affordable housing units for hundreds of residents in need. The development aims to “provide high-quality, affordable housing to low-income families and individuals,” according to a release from the City of Tampa. The project was a joint effort between the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County, the Tampa Housing Authority, and private developers. Ten of the 100 units are set aside for individuals transitioning from temporary housing, such as the Tampa Hope cottages. Half of these units are reserved for direct referrals from the city’s outreach team.An initiative to ensure safe, affordable housing for everyone in TampaMayor Jane Castor expressed her commitment to protecting Tampa’s working-class residents from being priced out of the city. “Our greatest fear is for the backbone of our city, our workforce, our Tampa natives who have built this city over generations, to be priced out,” Castor said. “We cannot and will not let that happen. This partnership represents an opportunity for an affordable housing initiative to help ensure safe housing remains attainable for people of all incomes.”Casa Bel Mar is designed to serve residents earning 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) or less. Households earning up to about $53,500 a year are eligible for the apartments in Hillsborough County. Rent at the complex ranges from $895 to $1,400 per month, with tenants paying no more than 30% of their income on housing costs.Tampa contributed $2 million in Federal HOME Funds“Since pre-COVID, housing prices have soared by 60 percent,” said Jeff McKittrick, the city’s Housing and Community Development Director. “In 2019, the median price of a home was $263,000. Today, it’s $425,000. Casa Bel Mar is just one more example of how our city tackles the affordable housing crisis head-on.”The City of Tampa has also contributed $2 million in Federal HOME Funds to support the development, ensuring the units remain affordable for at least 30 years. With the rising cost of housing in Tampa, Casa Bel Mar represents a significant step forward in providing much-needed relief to local residents. As more affordable housing projects like this one open across the city, Tampa continues to take action to address its housing shortage and make the city a place where people from all walks of life can thrive. The post 100-unit affordable housing community opens in Tampa appeared first on That's So Tampa.
